And Your Point Is?
Posted on August 10th, 2009 6 commentsOne thing I really hate is pointless news reports – an utter waste of time and resources – like this one for instance:
Qatar’s under construction Lusail city will be bigger than Beirut when completed, the Gulf Times has reported. The multi-billion dollar development will span 35 square km when finished, dwarfing Beirut which covers 19.8 square km, the paper said.
OK, so here are the hard facts: Beirut is 19.8 square kilometers and is home to 1.5 million people. Lusail will be 35 square kilometers in size and house about 455,000 people.
So what? What’s the point of the comparison?

If I remember my geography lessons correctly, I’d say Beirut is actually 27sqkm!! (not that it makes a difference, since artificial city here would still “dwarf” it…) I think Beirut is the hip city of the season which is why it was being used for comparison… We should probably be flattered…

We get a lot of those in the US. Perhaps my favorites consist of the Good News!! reports from Iraq and Afghanistan. I mean that in a droll way, of course.
